The loveseat has a long history that dates back to the 17th century. It was originally known as a courting chair or a tête-à-tête, which means "head-to-head" in French. These chairs were designed for two people to sit close to one another and engage in intimate conversation.
As the loveseat gained popularity throughout Europe, it eventually made its way across the pond to America. In the 19th century, American furniture makers began to create their own unique versions of the loveseat, which were often more ornate and elaborate than their European counterparts.
